I did that a long time ago with a beer called Aventinus (a robust wheat beer). The spice notes were too dominant when I first tried it, but I went back to it a year later after I had gone through a few milder hefeweisens, and now Aventinus is one of my all time favorites. I'm thinking it will be the same with Lagavulin.
I liked the Lagavulin 16 the first time I tried it, but did not like the 12 at all.
Months later, and trying them both on the same night I couldn't believe that I didn't like the 12 and there was more in common than different between the two. Interesting to hear if you change your mind or not on your next outing with the Lagavulin, but you may want to shoot for the 12 next time even.
