Liquor ****s in North Carolina is completely controlled by the state government, including the price. Stores like Total Wine can only sell beer and wine in NC. Liquor is **** only at ABC stores.
Even though the stores are state controlled, each store doesn't necessarily carry everything available in NC. If you're interested in shopping in NC, look for ABC stores in more affluent communities. Those stores will have a better selection of Scotch and bourbon.
South Carolina liquor stores are privately owned, I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong). They have to adhere to government regulations, but they have more control over their inventory.
