I would put forward an older "HP" a bit of smoke but not enough to put your friend off... i too hate smoke but love the hps.....good luck in finding something....

Your JD WILL age in the barrel, and as you are using a new barrel it will take on the oak and that is why you are getting a new smell, lots of vanilla and possibly toffee, there will be the oakiness...

The reason i ask is the barrel is just for doing port finishes, i was thinking that once the whisky had been it would it reall give a second whisky a strong port finish ?

The glengoyne 10 is a very nice dram, also the singleton is well worth trying, i would also look at Auchentoshan 12 year old, this is one of my favourite drams, and always goes down well....:D

I agree with the auchentoshan, its a great dram, as are all the auchentoshans, dont rule out the younger ones though, as said the choices you have made are a wide choice, maybe you should restrict...
