thanks for the advice folks! i'll admit my experience with blends have mostly been Dewars, some Johnnie Walker (can't remember which label but probably a mid-shelf) and Cutty Sark.

the Ardbeg 10 year definitely has some oompf to it! i preferred the Ardbeg Uigeadail personally. it's a LOT less peaty. i'm not really into the Island/Islay scotches but i do enjoy a dram of Talisker...

by the way, another smooth scotch is Glenrothes. this one we were recommended while in Scotland at a castle we stayed at. it's very smooth and can be found in the US (at least here in PA we found it).
