Auchentoshan Three Wood
A little back story here, my brother is graduating medical school next month and as a gift I plan on buying him a bottle; but I need to stay in a reasonable price range. $80 or less
His current favorite is Auchentoshan Three Wood
I guess I'd like to get some suggestions on something comparable that he may enjoy, as I know he has a new bottle of the Three Wood at his house currently.
Disclaimer: I'm an extreme novice on this subject, so that's why I'm here asking for any help.
Auchentoshan Three Wood is a delectable treat! It is a light whisky, in that it does not have any peat, smoke, or brine (much like a Speyside), but it is very rich with sherry and vanilla overtones.
It is difficult to match it up, as the best sherried Speysides fall short (Mac 12/18, Aberlour 12/16, Glenfarclas 12, etc...)
The closest in my collection is Glenrothes 1972, but that is upwards of $300.
Perhaps Aberlour 18, which I saw for **** around $80 last week. The bottle used to sell for $100, but I suppose the price has dropped. It's a really good bottle for the price.
Maybe Glendronach 12yr? It's a heavily sherried whisky, but it doesn't have the richness of the Three Wood.
For something SIMILAR to Three Wood, but even better (at least more complex), try Dalmore 15yr. It has the same rich sherry/vanilla layers, but has a bit more to round it out (hints of spice and smoke), but not peat/brine/phenols. Dalmore 15yr goes for around $65, so it will be within budget.
FYI - I can't seem to keep Three Wood or Dalmore 15 in stock, as I drink them up as soon as I get them, leaving my other bottles to collect dust!
Glad to see you sharing some of your opinions in these threads the last few days.
Love The Dalmore 12, and looking forward to tasting the 15 soon! Very good Speyside whisky doesn't have to break the bank!
Thanks for the suggestions; I'm sure he'll be pleased with whichever I decide on.
Appreciate the help
