Whiskey from The Great Exhibition

Hi,

I wonder if you can help me, I have a bottle if what I believe is whiskey from The Great Exhibition, 1851. The label is quite hard to read, but I think it says 'Nau De Ver ... Dantzic'. It's definitely not drinkable but I was wondering if you could shed any light in it.

I don't seem to be able to post a photo of it for some reason.

Thanks a lot

Mary-Ann,

What you have there is a type of Brandy rather than a Whisky...

Looks like your label says: "Eau de Vie de Dantzic"

An "Eau de Vie" (aka Eaux-de-vie) is simply a brandy without any fruit in the
liquid - Eau's are traditionally colorless, however the Eau de Vie de Dantzic
[often spelled Dantzick] also contains macerated Lemon Peel, with Mace or
Cinnamon, giving it a unique flavoring & color.

Eau de Vie de Dantzic has been around since at least 1827, and was first
described as a 'gold-leaf infused brandy'; often drank as a cordial or used in
the making of fine jellies.

Hi Walter,

Thanks for clearing that up, I had no idea it was brandy. It's been in my family, I think since it was originally bought, and has come into my possession since my dad passed away. My mum has said it was bought at The Great Exhibition.

I'll have to find somewhere to display it where my cat can't knock it over!

Thanks a lot

Mary-Ann
