Chill Filtered or Non-Chill Filtered
After a much promised visit to Scotland and a trip to the Edradour distillery, my wife and I are now converted to whisky. Amongst the advice given on the tour was that a good whisky should be a least 10 years old and non-chilled filtered as this retained all the flavourful oils. However, after perusing many different brands of whisky, the bottles that proudly proclame "Non- chill filtered" do not give their age. Whereas those that give an age do not say if they are chill filtered or not. Does anybody know the reason?

It sounds more like a coincidence that you're seeing bottles of whisky with no age statement and non-chillfiltered. All of these have age statements and mention non-chillfiltered: Ardbeg 10, Bowmore 16 Limited Edition, Benriach 15 wood finishes. And by the way, not to discount what you were told regarding nothing less than a 10 year to be a good whisky.....friend and whisky expert Tom says - "NO WAY! For example the “young” series Ardbegs at 7-9 yrs, the PC5-6-7-8 series, a fantastic 6 yr old “Badger” (Bruichladdich) I picked up from Milroy’s, the new Kilchoman, which I actually tried at less than 3 years, and let’s not forget about McCarthy’s from Oregon (3 yrs I think)."
Anyone else want to chime in here? Anyone? Anyone?! |
Chill filtered or non chill filtered
Dont think it says anywhere about it being an English exclusive, but the Big Chill organiser said, "Im delighted that they have chosen to reform for the Big Chill" - so take that into context and I imagine that their festival appearance will be there; followed by Connect, Electric Picnic and Bestival perhaps? V Festival at a push.

NEVER, NEVER, but NEVER listen to anyone who makes a statement such as a "good whisky should be a least 10 years old and non-chilled filtered as this retained all the flavourful oils." These kind of statements are usually made by tour guides who add editorial comments to an alread CANNED talk for a tour. Respectfully, these people are either part time looking for a little extra money, a college student or a retired person looking to fill in their day. For the most part they know nothing about whisky. I DO prefer NON-CHILL FILTERED whiskies as they do retain complexity, but the statement "at least 10 years old" respectfully is rubbish.
