Buchanan's Blended Scotch Whisky

Thanks for your reply, Michael. My original post was dated 29th August under Mrs E McWhinnie (before I registered) and really just asked if anyone has any info on this bottle, especially age and possible value. It belongs to my neighbour whose husband was an employee of Buchanans and he died in the 1970s The only clue is the number on the bottle 75/297 It does not say the age of the whisky when it was bottled. Any other info would be appreciated.

Buchanan's Blended Scotch Whisky

Thanks for the photo! I can see about having it dated for you. Here's some background information which comes from Buchanan's parent company Diageo:

"In 1879, James Buchanan moved to London to work as a sales agent for another whisky firm. In 1884 he set up James Buchanan & Co.and set out to create the perfect blended Scotch Whisky - a blend which had the perfect balance of body and flavour and he used his name as a personal guarantee. As a result 'the Buchanan's blend' was born."

"James Buchanan earned his place among the most important people in the world of whisky - Dewar and Walker. Buchanan and Dewar merged companies in 1915. The following year, they became part of Distillers Company Limited (DCL) which had then become United Distillers & Vinters (UDV) in 1987. The brand is now owned by Diageo."

Variants of Buchanan's: Buchanan's Red Seal, Buchanan's Deluxe 12 year old, Buchanan's Special Reserve 18 year old. Top markets are Venezuela, United States, Mexico, Colombia. Buchanan's is very popular within the Latin community.

Buchanan's whisky

Lizmac, this is what we found out from the Diageo archive department...Your bottle of Buchanan's has been dated to be from the late 1960s – early 1970s. The Royal Warrant statement is ‘by appointment to the Queen’ which makes it post 1955. The front label is very similar to the examples the archive department has from the end of the 1960s, and the shape of the bottle and the closure are in keeping with the changes that were made to the bottle at the turn of this decade. Your bottle is an example of the product that is now Buchanan’s De Luxe 12 Year Old, which dates back to the 1920s in this format. The original Buchanan’s Blend was the company’s very first product, first sold in 1884 and eventually evolving into Buchanan’s ‘Black & White’ c1904. :)

Buchanan,s "De Luxe" Presentation Flagon

Several years ago I received a Presentation Flagon.
It is in a green velvet pouch with Buchanan's "De Luxe" embroidered in gold thread and still in original black box.
The flagon is I think ceramic and is in original condition sealed with a pouring lip and a ceramic cork stopper fitted into a finger or thumb grip The flagon has in red a Royal by appointment to Her Majesty the Queen.
Can anyone give me any information on this and possible value.

Re the messages below.

I have the same item, recently re-discovered.

Not sure if I should open or sell it. Do you have a suggestion as to its value?

We can have your bottle dated for you, but would need for you to register here on the forum and then upload photos.

Help dating an unopened bottle of Buchanan's

5 Attachment(s)
Received as gift in 1980 in the Philippines. Was told then it was about 20 years old.
Says "BY APPOINTMENT TO HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN" so must be later than 1953.
Can anyone give more details?

Buchanan's de Luxe

Your bottle most likely dates to between 1955-1959.

Royal Warrants to Queen Elizabeth II were largely granted during 1955,
and Buchanan's discontinued usage of "Spring-cap" closures in 1959.

An identical bottle was sold at Bonham's Auction in NY on Oct 28-2012
for $166 (including Buyer's Premium), which netted the seller about $120.
