Macallan 25 Year Old Aged in Sherry Oak
i had 350 in gift cards, so i figured id pony up the rest and try this beast out. i had tried the macallan 25 year old previously, but as a limited edition silver anniversary edition, and that was beyond amazing. so i was in contact with the macallan trying to get ahold of that particular bottle, but in canada the lcc(liquor control comission) controls all alcohol and we cant buy from any outside sources other than them, which brings me to this particular bottle.
when i cracked the 25 yr old, i was expecting a similar taste to before, but it was completely different. this is a more subdued whiskey, it is superb, but more of a well balanced perfect whisky than something robustly spectacular. you get a slight hint of caramel, peat, honestly i think i can taste the still LOL, honestly i cant distinguish any more tase characters, its too balanced if that makes sense! i cant explain it. also for a 25 yr old, it was not exactly the smoothest, i was kinda disapointed to be honest, i was expecting more from this bottle due to the amount it cost, but without a doubt it is beautiful. i have only had 2 shots last night from this bottle and maybe i was let down thinking i didnt get what i wanted so ill post once more with my second shot. |
When was it you tried the first bottle of Macallan 25yr? As much as they may try to keep it the same over the years, they can't keep the exact same barley or keep the exact same barrel... So one 25yr will be different from the next. It can't be helped. But the quality should always be high, especially for the price you're being charged. So in that sense there is consistency.
I've always heard great things about the prestigious Macallan brand, but I've tried the majority of their range and it doesn't blow my hair back. Nothing wrong with it, but it noses & tastes politically correct. I think it is trying to be everything to everyone. I've never had the 25yr though, so I am unable to offer any thoughts. And I know people on here love their Macallan's, so I look forward to their comments. What province are you in with such limitations? |
Initially the 25 yr old was finished[exclusively I believe] in sherry casks. Over the years these have been harder to come by and the finish is now called fine oak. There is some sherry but not to the degree there was previously. If I messed this up someone will correct me here.

AAhh.. the 25.. It is the one that started it all for me..I I didn't think i liked scotch till this one showed up..
I keep the 18 on hand.. It's similar to the 25 and costs less.. Alot of people just drink the 18.. |
I suspect that quite a few people simply cannot afford the Mac 25. It just went up recently down here to, I believe, $550 at the best of the discount liquor outlets that I know of. Considerable difference in price between $129.95 that I can get Mac 18 for and $549.95 that I would have to shell out for the 25.
