Square Bottle Dewar's

I have found several bottles of unopened Dewar's 12 year old blended whiskey. The bottle is green glass, it has a square shape, (not round) , the label reads...
"Ne Plus Ultra" the very finest Scotch Whisky of Great Age. Specially Reserved and selected, John Dewar & Sons Ltd, Perth Scotland. 25 ounces.

My question is... when was it bottled? And can you place the age of the Scotch 12 years beyond this?

This bottle may have been purchased in Paris.

Would this be prized by a Scotch affectionado? Or should I open it up and have a taste? (I would hate to drink a bottle that could make a mortgage payment for me) Please let me know if you can shed any light.

Thanks, -cmwiggle- :)

dewar's

cmwiggle -

any chance you can post a photo of your square bottle of dewar's? my guess is that it may be worth something, but likely not enough to pay a mortgage statement!

send a pic!

dewar's ne plus ultra

From what I have read, it's one of Dewar's Rare Whiskies. Maybe worth between £100 - 140 but could be more, could be less. Have you tried to contact Dewar's direct?

Nice pics by the way!

about your answer to my query...

I have tried to contact Dewars directly, no answer back as of yet.
Thanks for your help, I will keep looking for more information.
If anyone else knows anything about this whiskey please respond.

Square Bottle Dewar's Update

Here is what I have found out, probably bottled in the late fifties early sixties. Premium blend 12 years old, similar to the Dewar's Ancestor special blend. Sold mainly in France and Canada. These bottles were purchased in Paris according to the person I acquired them from. Investigation into what it is worth/brought similar bottles at auction went for approximately £150 - £225

I have three bottles, one to sip, one to save, one to share with someone that has an interest. If you are interested please respond with Private Message. You must live within the United States and enjoy fine scotch whiskey. ;)

Ne Plus Ultra

I have a miniature of Ne Plus Ultra. Bottled by John Dewar & Sons ,Perth. It is a square green bottle but the label differs from yours. Firstly it has the Royal Appointment Seal. It is marked Scoth Whisky De Luxe. On the left hand side it has printed in French 12 Ans d'Age and on the right 12 year old. It is 45ml and 40% alc/vol.I bought it with a lot of other old bottles of whisky for my collection but I don't know what it is worth

A kid's experience with Ne Plus Ultra

I remember my father drank Dewar's Ne Plus Ultra" As a 14 year old kid, it may have been the first scotch I scoffed from my father's liquor cabinet, in the late fifties, in Fort William (now Thunder Bay) in NW Ontario, Canada. As I recall, I wasn't impressed then, but I know I'd like it now. The bottle in the posted picture certainly looks very familiar to me, although I can't be sure of the details.

I've occasionally looked for it in liquor stores, but haven't seen it for decades. Does anyone know the details of the brand's demise ??

.... Don

Dewar's Ne Plus Ultra

For those of you interested in Dewar's Ne Plus Ultra - here is some background information which comes directly from Jacqui Seargeant, Dewar's Global Archive Manager. She asked me to pass it along to all of you!

Dewar's main deluxe brand from about 1907 onwards was Victoria Vat, however it wasn't Dewar’s only deluxe brand. Ne Plus Ultra was also introduced about this time, and was first registered as a trademark in 1909.

In 1954, Victoria Vat was re-named Ancestor, although Ne Plus Ultra continued to be sold in certain markets - but on a small scale. In particular in Canada Ne Plus Ultra continued as our deluxe brand. The final shipments of Ne Plus Ultra went to Canada in 1997 and Dewar’s no longer produce this product.
---------------
Ne Plus Ultra does sometimes come up at auction or in old whisky shops, but it's not very often and if you do find it, it's likely to be a bit expensive!

Please email me (Joanne at CCIN.com) or post photos of your bottle and be sure to include a close up and very clear shot of the label so we can read it. We will then pass along your request and photos to the Global Archive Manager at Dewar's for information. Please be aware that there's a good possibility she may not be able to provide a value. However, you can contact any of these companies for a value: McTears.com, Bonhams.com, and / or onlinebbr.com I was able to find the below information from a September 2006 auction at McTear's:

"The Victoria Vat-Circa 1940 By Appointment to The Late King George V, John Dewar & Sons Ltd., Distillers, Perth. Spring cap, embossed lead capsule. Level: into neck of bottle: - Sold for £280.00. Keep in mind, I'm not quite sure if this is what you have - so be sure to send us or post your photos.

dewars ancestor

I just polished off a bottle with my best friend, given to us indirectly by his grandmother. We were cleaning out her house and found it. great taste and easy to drink. I am keeping the bottle, love the spring top. I was just looking around to find out more about the drink. Was looking to possibly buy more.

Dewar's Ne Plus Ultra

I too have a bottle of this Whisky in the original box. A couple of years ago my neighbor wandered over with it and said, "I don't drink scotch and this has been sitting around my house for years. I thought you might like it," and he gave it to me. Nice neighbor eh?

interested owner of Ne plus ultra

My grandfather purchased his first bottle of scotch at Ontario Liquor Control Board sometime in the early 1900's. It is a 26 1/2 oz green square bottle of Ne Plus Ultra by John Dewar and Sons Ltd., Perth, Scotland. It has a gold metal top with Dewar's embossed on it secured by a piece of wire with a small medallion on the end of the wire with the letter "D" in the middle of it. The square bottle is dark green glass with a circle on the bottom of the bottle with the letters as follows:
S 309
N 4
U G B (or 8)
It has sat unopened and still has the box that it came in.
Any idea of its value?

I have found 6 bottles that have sold at auction of Dewar's Ne Plus Ultra. They range from 102 EURO to 152 EURO ( US$127 to US$192 )

Unregistered 08-14-2010 12:17 AM

Not a scotch drinker, but I stumbled upon a dusty bottle in the corner of the liquor room about 10 years ago. Ne Plus Ultra was liquid butterscotch gold. Outrageous. Anything similar made today?

victoria vat

I have a square bottle of dewars Victoria Vat which does not say 12 years old it is in near mint sealed condition and says "by appointment " with the monarchs seal. The top has a schenley ribbon showing tax paid . 100 % sealed with a spring like device on top. Can anyone tell me if this is safe to drink? also what might the value be. Thank you.
Michael

Jojo 12-17-2010 07:35 PM

We can help determine the age of your bottle - but need for you to post images. As for whether it's safe to drink, sure it is - however, throughout the years, the taste may have changed a bit. If you decide to drink it yourself, nose the contents and judge from there. Value? See how old it is first and then you may want to check with companies such as bonhams.com or mctears.com You can also check on ebay to see if there's anything comparable to what you have.

Just some added info.... Victoria Vat was Dewar's main deluxe brand (along with Ne Plus Ultra) from about 1907 onwards. In 1954, the name was changed to Ancestor. You mentioned your bottle has a spring cap - Dewar's started using these type of metal caps during the year 1927. However, during the late 1950s and early 60s, they were replaced by modern screw caps.

I drank a lot of Ne Plus Ultra

When I was 18, in 1966, a friend brought some from the USA, and I tasted and liked. Then my parents went to a trip to the USA and I asked them to bring me this brand (I thought it was a brand), they brought me a case (I think they bought it at the airport duty free shop), and I drank it all with my friends. At the time, it did not seem such a rare item. Unfortunately I did not keep any bottle.
