I like Maker's Mark a lot, but really have nothing to compare it to. So I'm looking for suggestions from you all for what a novice should enjoy next. I was thinking maybe something from Ireland just because I am Irish. I'm also not rich, so something a middle class guy with bills and three kids can afford without angering my wife ;)

Sorry for moving my reply to a new thread but this isn't really JD Green
related and I didn't want to sidetrack that thread too much.

MM is a Wheated Bourbon (http://www.libationlab.com/wheated-bourbon/) which puts it in the Whiskey "minority" so if
you really like that, you may find other whiskies are not especially to
your liking. Which isn't to say you can't enjoy a variety of different
flavor profiles. Many folks can & do but if you are able to purchase
small 50 ml sample bottles (Irish, Scotch, Rye, whatever!), it may
save you some $ as you "experiment".

Good luck!

MM was my introduction to Whisky. For a long time I'd been curious about enjoying Whisky and fianlly gave in and got a bottle of MM at the supermarket. And I thoroughly enjoyed that bottle. This was only a couple months ago. Second bottle was JB Black. I enjoyed it as well, but found the flavor to be a little thin in comparison to MM. I was, however, intrigued by the finish and aftertaste . . . wood? Leather? Interesting nonetheless. Each sip had me dwelling on that lingering finish.

Although the JB Black was good, my next bottle was more MM.

Then I recently picked up a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel 2001 Vintage. Wow. It's so smooth, rich and sweet. I've only had one pour from the bottle so far. Haven't really figured it all out yet. But I can say already that EWSB knocked MM into second place on the first taste. And what's more, EWSB was actually a buck or two cheaper than MM

Not sure what to try next. Maybe Elijah Craig, or Wild Turkey 101. I'm not at a point yet where I have several bottles around to choose from, but I'm getting there.

Personally, I'd try the Elijah Craig. I've had it in the past, and thought it's a step down from MM (in my opinion) it's not too drastic a step down. Either that, or give Jim Beam Small Batch a whirl. Same company (Beam Global) after all.
