Hi, I've just registered so ....Nice to meet you.

I'm hoping the whisky.com community can help identify a bottle I managed to get my hands on. It's a really long and slightly interesting story. If you want to hear it I am happy to oblige. In the meantime, let me get to the heart of the matter.

I have in my possession the following:

Yamazaki Distillery 20 year single malt.
Casked in 1984.
Bottled in 2004.

Basically, I want to know if this is something I should just open up and drink because I could always get another bottle somewhere or is it rare?

I know the bottle cost 30,000 Yen when the US dollar was 30% stronger than the Yen. So, in US currency, the cost was $210. Now that the Yen rate is 25% stronger than the dollar ....ths same bottle would cost $375.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Any information you can provide is helpful.

Regards, ppunker.

Actually ...it never dawned on me to Google Yamazaki 1984. From what I found was apparently this is a pretty significant year ...because it was their first attempt at serious export numbers. I read 300 bottles came to the US. However, we are talking about a 25 year. Mine is a 20. From what I read , the 25 years is spectacular. Anyway ....if anyone has anythng to add. I appreciate it.

Never saw Yamazaki 20 but I've tried the 10, 12, 18, 1984, undated and Puncheon. Out of all of them I like the 12 best, which is probably good because it's easily available over here for about $58 a bottle, unlike the others.
The undated stuff and Puncheon both tasted like once was enough, as did the 10 year.

Pricing in Japan:
Yamazaki 10 ¥3,780
Yamazaki 12 ¥6,480
Yamazaki 18 ¥17,800
Yamazaki 25 ¥89,800

There was no pricing available on the 1984 as it is no longer available, but for about $20 I got a glass of it! Still prefer the 12, but that's personal tastes, and I let my friend finish it because he seemed to like it better than I did.
