Ok trying to buy my boyfriend a good bottle of scotch for Valentines day. I have NO CLUE about scotch. I don't want to ask him because he will know what I am buying him. My problem is I have only heard Glenfiddich and McCallan from his mouth. When I went to buy it they had a bottle of 18yr Glenfiddich for around $87, and a larger bottle of 12yr McCallan for same price. Although I ususally go for more for the money, I felt I was probably better buying the older scotch, so I did. Then I asked his brother and he says I should have gotten the larger 12yr bottle of McCallan. Any feedback?? I can exchange it but I am going to do what the majority of you suggest.

Personally I'd take the 18 year Glenfiddich (even better go for the Solera), BUT - Macallan is GREAT and if his brother thinks he would like the larger 12 yo, go with that. Afterall, it's what your boyfriend will enjoy best - and hopefully his brother knows his scotch preferences well! Good luck & Happy Valentine's Day!

I just read about the 18yr Glenfiddich and I might stick with that. I'm looking for quality over quanitity.

It's too late now, but the 'fiddich 18 is excellent. Personally, gasp, I don't like Macallan 12 at all.
Either way I'm sure he'll love the gesture.
Cheers!

Interestingly enough, our tastes are reversed. I don't care for the Fiddich 18yr, but find the Mac 12yr to be pretty decent.

I wished I could have helped you out. My wife bought me 4 whiskeys for valentines day, including 3 scotches. My favorites are Highland Park and Springbank. You can see how I reviewed them all at my site below if your boyfriend ever wants another bottle b/c I have all price ranges.

Your an awesome girl to do that for him! Great gift!

I almost got him a Highland Park after reading about it. I ended up keeping the Glenfiddich 18. He loved it. The best part was that he had never had it but he had tried the Mac 12yr, so I was glad I stayed with my original purchase. I am pretty sure the next bottle I buy him will be a Highland Park. I enjoyed studying up on scotch and think I will continue to do this for him. Sadly I don't have the hair on my chest required to drink Scotch. LOL! WOW! I tried a sip of the 18 and it was waaaaaay too much for me. I even gagged. Kudos to those who can drink it though, I'll stick with my Classic 12 it's like water compared to Scotch. LOL! I guess this makes me a little low class.
