Awhile back I read about the many distillery tours in Scotland. I recall there were some that offered the ability for you to purchase a cask of scotch now and they would keep for you until you wanted to retrieve it once it has aged.

Am I imagining this or are there distilleries that do this??? If so -- any help on ones that do?

You can buy casks from at least 5 distilleries direct

see http://www.scotlandwhisky.com/about/874668/

Before you could also buy Springbank casks.

I purchased a cask of Bruichladdich in 2001. Do your homework. Although you can have it bottled and sent to the USA, I can assure you that it is not an easy task. You will have to be a relentless soul to endure the red tape.

Hmmmm, buying a cask is going to be expensive AND very difficult to be sure it is something you'd like. Remember, single cask whisky's vary massively, and you could buy something you don't like, meaning you have anything between 100 - 650 bottles of a Malt you may not want to drink!
Then, as Kenneth points out, getting it shipped to the States will be another issue entirely!

Hi

If you are buying a cask check it out first. Make sure it has no leaks and nose it - remember the cask is one of the largest influences on the final flavour.

The extra costs to watch for are storage rent, bottling, transportation and Duty (payable as soon as it is taken out of Bond).

hello guys,,,,
im lloking at buying a couple of casks from distillerys that do the whole private cask sales thing for an upcoming birthday (30th ) anyways, having read all the info that the distillerys prduce regarding pricing etc etc, i find no mention to the what happens with the empty cask once your whisky has been bottled? i mean, if youve bought a 1st fill sherry cask, in 10 years time, that cask will still be able to be used again as a 2nd fill, so still has a value.
so, in a nut shell, do the distillery own that cask, do i own it and if so do i sell the empty cask back to the distillery or is it like ginger bottles and you get 20p back or whatever the rate is for casks.

hopefully someone will able to shed some light on this for .

For the cask I purchased from Bruichladdich, I owned only the whisky. They kept the cask once bottled.
