Hello, fine sirs.
I am looking to purchase a large amount (keg) of some low end whiskey or bourbon. As of yet, all I can seem to find is the full barrel of the Jack Daniels Single Barrel, which is considerably more than I want, in terms of dollars. Ideally, I'd like to see a link to a pony keg of Black Velvet or Jim Beam. To clarify, I AM a connoisseur, however, what it is that I'm a connoisseur of is getting &@$#faced for very minimal dollars. Any and all help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
Hey there! Wish I had better news - Jim Beam doesn't sell their barrels to the general public and I don't know of any bourbon distilleries which do sell them at a discounted or bargain price. Good luck with your search.

It is possible to buy a full barrel from some of the distilleries, many stores (such as Binny's in Chicago) do this, but I am not sure you can just purchase one personally unless you have connections. A barrel contains around 500-700 bottles, so you better be thirsty!!!
I thought spirits had to be bottled, by law, in the USA and could not be transfered to the consumer (ie in a retail transaction) in the barrel. I know that Woodford will sell you a barrel that they will mark and age in the Rickhouse. When it is ready to be dropped they bottle the contents and ask you where to ship the cases. If I think of it I will try to get a photo of Woodfords Rickhouse where you can see barrels marked to companies and persons who bought them. Oh and the price is in the many thousands of dollars. Of course, you could always purchase a keg or have one made, pour your bottles of booze into it and see how well your garage acts as a Rickhouse!~

The Tullibardie Visitor Centres in Blackford Scotland are now selling a barell of whisky, which they offer a private labeling in your own name. Details at the visitor centre.

Wasmund's (http://copperfox.biz/products/) here in the USA offers a "Barrel Kit" in a variety of sizes.
I've been meaning to give this a try but have yet to get around to
ordering. As someone who owns two JD barrels, the Wasmund's
pricing is quite reasonable.
[edit to add - I have e-mailed Wasmund's twice (April & June 2009)
asking for specific details on this program but received no reply.
That may explain why I never got around to ordering...]
By the way, I first learned of the Wasmund's program on John Hansell's blog (http://blog.maltadvocate.com/2009/04/15/update-on-wasmunds-single-malt-whisky/).
MJL is correct about the selling of spirits in the barrel. Wasmund's
sells you the empty charred barrel with the bottled spirits which
you put in the barrel and age as you like.
On a related note, the Bourbon Dork recently started a "re-barrel
project" (http://bourbondork.blogspot.com/search?q=re-barrel&updated-max=2009-11-14T23%3A16%3A00-05%3A00&max-results=20)with some Very Old Barton BIB. Click "newer posts" at
lower left of the post for the progress.
edit: I e-mailed again and did receive a reply from Rick
Wasmund regarding the barrel program. I hope to set
something up soon!

I'm pleased to report that after talking with Rick Wasmund,
I went ahead and ordered three of his charred 2 litre barrels
(they also offer 5, 10, 18.5, and 194 litre sizes.) Shipping
for the 3 empty 2 litre barrels was less than $9. US. I'm not
sure about International sales but if you're interested, I'd
suggest mailing Rick to inquire.
I was able to order the Wasmunds 124 proof spirits from
another source and am looking forward to starting a barrel
project of my own.

It appears you will not be able to find cheap whiskey by the cask.
I suggest you wait until your local shop has a significant sale, and stock up on the Jim Beam handles.
