A classic whisky distillery is being shut down in a cost-cutting measure.
The Edrington Group plans to close the Tamdhu distillery and malting
operations in Aberlour next year resulting in a loss of more than 30 jobs.
The group has decided to concentrate its efforts on its three main brands,
The Macallan, Glenrothes and Highland Park. Another distillery Glenturret
will also remain open. The closure is a response to the economy.

Whisky is still selling well but costs have risen and The Scotsman quotes
Graham Hutcheon, group operations director for Edrington, who said that
the move was done to make sure that the "business is the right size and
shape to support current and future activity levels." Edrington employs
about 2,200 people across the globe and also owns the Famous Grouse and
other brands such as Cutty Sark and Brugal rum. The Tamdhu distillery
opened in the late 1890s and went through several closures over the years
including a long period between 1928 and 1947.

On sale? I woulda guessed the opposite - stores charging more
because it's soon to be no longer available. I agree that it is a
good deal for that price.

A shame but bound to happen with industry cost cutting in these times .

Thanks for the heads up , the LCBO does happen to have it in a couple of local stores for $45 , I think I'll grab 2 , one to enjoy and one to keep :)

Really?! This is a shame.. We've been selling the Tamdhu 10 year at the store for awhile now. When I started it was $19.99, but has since jump up only a dollar.

I'll be sure to buy a bottle or two before it's too late!

Picked up a bottle of Tamdhu 10 last night... Pretty basic malty stuff. But I'm happy to have one kickin' around.

For $21 per bottle at our state run liquor store along with the distillery having a long and interesting history, Tamdhu is now on my hit list for near future purchase!

Definitely dishearthening news. I enjoy Tamdhu very much. Hopefully its just a temporary blip and will restart production when (if) the economy picks up again.

Picked up a bottle this past Monday. $22/bottle. Have yet to taste it but locked and loaded in inventory! Likely good bang for the buck.

Keeping on topic, has anyone noticed a shortage of Tamdhu in their area?
I'm surprised that a year after the announced closing, it is still rather easy
to find on the shelf. Not complaining mind you - the longer it sticks around,
the better for us!
