Are there any brands on the market of 40yr old whisky? My boyfriend would like to give his brother a special bottle for his 40th birthday, and the oldest we can find in shops is 18-20 yrs old.

Thanks for your help!

Dear lmm41,

Here are some suggestions:

Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch - 40 Year Old
Iain Henderson, Laphroaig's current Distillery Manager, had this to say, "Laphroaig® 40 Year Old is a superlative whisky from one of the greatest periods in our history, with a distinctiveness you would expect from the crowning addition to the Laphroaig® family.

Glenfiddich 40 Year Old
Limited edition of 600 bottles, each bottle is signed by Peter Gordon, the great-great-grandson of The Glenfiddich Distillery founder William Grant. Glenfiddich 40 Year Old was recognised as the world’s best single malt Scotch whisky in Whisky Magazine’s “Best of the Best“ tasting 2003 - voted for by master distillers, blenders, journalists and whisky writers.

Strathisla 40 Year Old by Gordon & MacPhail

Dew of Ben Nevis "40 Years Old Unique" 'Blended at Birth' 40%
This whisky was awarded a gold medal by Monde Selection of Belgium in 2004.

Tamdhu 1966 MacPhail's Collection

Cheers!

A lot more 40 year olds have come out in the year since this original post. But they are all amazingly expensive. You should be able to find these online:

Highland Park 40 (very highly rated)
Bruichladdich 40
Auchentoshan 1965, 40 Year old
Glenfarclas 40
Bowmore 1955, 40 Year old

There are also a slew of Macallans over 40 years and too many independant bottlings to even start to list.

But generally speaking, 40 year old whisky is past it's prime. They just get too woody after that many years in the barrel. There are exceptions, but you stand a good chance of paying $2000 for a OK whisky. So be careful and read lots of reviews before you purchase somthing this old.

I think the best bet for 40 year olds is Duncan Taylor of Scotland who have released around 20 single malts this year. I visited them this year and I know they have Highland Park, Macallan, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahaban and the rest for fantastic prices

I recently had the Duncan Taylor Rare Auld Deluxe 38 Year Old Blended Whisky - OK, so I know it's a blend and it's not a 40 year old. However, it was absolutely OUTSTANDING. Nutmeg, cinnamon, raisin, fruits -simply an explosion of great flavors...Wow.

I have a bottle of dunhill "old Master" blended whisky. It was given to me in 1987 and was supposed to be for the Dunhill centenary celebrations or something like that. It has a cellar masters number of "E 60802". It was supposed to be 25 years old when it was issued. Does any body know anything about it?

Hi,

I have a beautiful leather giftbox with Dalmore 40 years, with certificate. It was a gift and very expensive but I do not drink whisky. The price in the store is about 1400 pounds. I will sell cheaper, but for a present it is too expensive I think....I am looking for a buyer.
kind regards, Sandra (sandra.pijl@talitha-internet.nl)

Do I understand that you feel that longer ageing of whisky is detrimental to the flavor?
Then, why would distillers such as Glenlivet age their whiskys for 30, 40 50 years?

when he turns 40 in 2010 you could also buy a bottle from 1970 wich would be cheaper then a bottle of 40 years of age. but even a 40yo strathisla doesn't have to cost you more then 200 to 250 pounds.

a nice bottle from 1970 will be between 125 and 175 depending on the distilery.

feel free to send me an email with your budget and I am sure I can find you the perfect gift

Hi Chauncey
The whisky does get better when it is aged in the cask. Some say that after a certain point it can get "woody", but that is after many decades. Some Scotch Whisky Distillers even vat the malt and put it back into Sherry casks for a period of time (even a few years) before bottling.
