Viewer's Comments about Strathmill
The
Strathmill Distillery site which is situated in the town of
Keith was originally established as an oatmeal mill by Mr.
A.G. Johnstone in 1823. During this time, it was named Strathisla
Mills. In the year 1891 during the whisky boom, the mill was
converted into a distillery and named Glenisla-Glenlivet.
It was named Glenisla because of the distillery's close proximity
to the River Isla.
The distillery was purchased by W & A Gilbey (well known
gin producers from London) in 1895 and the name was changed
to Strathmill which means 'the mill in the long valley'. Gilbey
was also the owner the distilleries
Glen Spey and Knockando.
United Distillers & Vintners (UDV) acquired Strathmill
in 1962 and then in 1975, it became under the ownership of
Grand Metropolitan, however managed by Justerini & Brooks
- wine merchants and blenders of

The River Isla |
the famous J&B whisky range. J&B is currently now
owned by Diageo plc. Strathmill released a single malt in
1909 and today there are a few available from independent
bottlers. The primary focus of Strathmill has always been
contributing to blended whiskies such as J&B
and Dunhill.
The famed whisky author Michael Jackson has described Strathmill's
house style as "the whisky's answer to orange muscat.
With dessert." |
This expression, although lighter in color, has the
aroma of orange peel, and rasins. It is a very oily
with a mouth coating sweet sugar cane complexity.
Enjoy this malt with desert or to finish a fine dinner. |
Nose: Dry, nutty amd
airy. Dried banana on muesli, green grassy notes,
tea leaves, walnut.
Palate: Very soft
and attractive and flows straight down the middle.
Medium sweet with some vanilla and nut.
Finish: Soft.
Overall: Attractive
and delicate.
