Viewer's Comments about Kinclaith

The Kinclaith Distillery was built in 1957 within the huge complex which also housed the Strathclyde grain distillery. It was originally owned by Long John International and Seager Evans - both subsidiarires of the American company Schenley. In 1975 Kinclaith was sold to Whitbread. It was then dismantled so that the Strathclyde facilities could be expanded. Kinclaith was the last malt distillery in Glasgow.

The majority of the production from Kinclaith went into Long John blends. However, there are independent single malt bottlings by Cadenheads, Gordon & MacPhail, Duncan Taylor and Signatory. Kinclaith is a rare, sought after whisky which commands very high prices. Michael Jackson describes the house style as "light and melony".

Duncan Taylor & Company released a historic collection of cask strength single cask whiskies from distilleries which no longer exist. The collection is known as the "Rarest of the Rare" and represents a range of single malt whiskies from long closed distilleries which have not been available as a standard product for sometime - if ever. The Rarest of the Rare range includes some of the near mythical whisky from distilleries such as Kinclaith.
