Comments about Glen Scotia
The
Glen Scotia Distillery was established in Campbeltown in 1832
by Stewart, Galbraith and Co. It was purchased by West Highland
Malt Distillers Ltd. (WHMD) in 1919 just as Campbeltown was
receiving bad press for focusing primarily on producing quantity
and not quality whisky. In 1924, the distillery was purchased
by a manager from WHMD, Duncan MacCallum, only to have to
close it in 1928. In 1930, MacCallum drowned himself in the
Campbeltown Loch reportedly due to being swindled out of a
great amount of money in a business deal and rumour has his
ghost continues to haunt the distillery.
Glen Scotia lay silent until 1933. It was taken over by the
Bloch Brothers (owners of the Scapa Distillery in Orkney)
and then sold to Hiram Walker in 1954. Just one year later,
it was sold to A. Gillies & Co. which later became part
of the blenders company Amalgameted Distillers Products.

In
1984, Amalgameted closed Glen Scotia and five years later,
it was purchased by the Canadian whisky company, Gibson International.
By 1994, it was closed once again. However, in 1999, Glen
Scotia was purchased by the Loch Lomond Company (Loch Lomond
Distillery, Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd.) and since
then it has been in operation. The only other operating distillery
in Campbeltown is Springbank.
Glen Scotia whisky is a lightly smoky, salty malt with a quite
concentrated nose and good length despite a delicate structure.
