Glen Mhor 1965 Single Malt Scotch WhiskyThe Glen Mhor Distillery was founded in the late 1800s by John Birnie and James Mackinlay of the Leith blending house. It was located in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands along with two other distilleries, Glen Albyn and Millburn. All were owned by Distillers Company Limited (DCL). Before Glen Mhor was acquired by DCL in 1972, it had been part of a private limited company since 1906 with Johnnie Walker and Sons Ltd. taking a substantial shareholding. In 1920, the company acquired Glen Alybn, a direct competitor of Glen Mhor. From that point on, the distilleries operated together as a team.

The Glen Mhor distillery stayed in operation until 1983, however, due to low profits, DCL closed it down. Several years later the distillery was demolished and a shopping centre was been built upon the site.

Glen Mhor Single Malt Scotch whisky has been described as smooth and medium bodied. It has a plesant, subtle sweetness which is complemented by a dryish, heatery aftertaste. (Collins Pocket Reference) Glen Mhor can still be found in independent bottlers' collections. Such bottlings have become increasingly rare and are much sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts.

Glen Mhor's house style is described in Michael Jackson's Malt Whisky Companion as 'Aromatic, reacly. Quite sweet. With dessert or after dinner.' Some malt was released as a distillery bottling, although most of the output went to blenders. There are still some independent bottlings available.

Glen Mhor Whisky Distillery
The Glen Mhor Distillery, founded the late 1800s, became the first distillery in 1954 to use Saladin Boxes (mechanical process) to malt its barley. The distillery's water source is the same as Glen Albyn - the famous Loch Ness.

The name Glen Mhor is prounounced Glen Vawr and in Gaelic it is means 'big valley'.

Glen Mhor was demolished in the late 1980s and a shopping complex now occupies the site.
