Viewer's Comments about Benrinnes

Ben Rinnes (simply known as "The Ben" by locals) is a mountain in the region of Moray, Scotland. The beautiful and distinctive outline of Ben Rinnes (840m, 2775ft) is one of the best loved landmarks in Banffshire. Benrinnes Distillery was established in the 1820s and was built 700 feet (213 meters) above sea level on the northern slopes of the mountain of the same name which dominates eastern Speyside.

The Benrinnes Distillery is mainly used for blending. As a malt, it's ranked top class by blenders and it's also one of the handful of whiskies rated first class. Benrinnes practices a form of partial triple distillation, which helps to give this whisky a real creamy rich character. It wasn't until 1991 the malt whisky had its official bottling in a Flora and Fauna range.

Benrinnes became part of industry giant Diageo when United Distillers and International Distillers & Vintners merged in 1998.

The Benrinnes Distillery

The early history of the Benrinnes Distillery indicates that it was very much run as part of a farm, with various outhouses being converted. The original site of the distillery was some 2 miles from its present location, but was destroyed during the Great Flood of Moray in 1829. The distillery has enjoyed almost continual production with only short breaks for the war years.

The distillery is one of six distilleries immediately below "The Ben" that make use of the precious clear water from the Scurran and Rowantree burns close to "the summit of the mountain".

Visitor Centrer: The Benrinnes Distillery does not have a visitor center, however, it may be possible to arrange a tour. Please call: +44 (0)1340 871215
