Viewer's Comments about Allt-A-Bhainne
Allt-a-Bhainne
was built in 1975 by Seagram's on the slopes of Benrinnes
which provides plentiful water supplies. It was the fourth
distillery built by Seagram's in the mid '70s. The main purpose
of Allt-A-Bhainne was to supply malt whisky for the Chivas
Regal blends. While it was still a relatively new, high-tech
distillery, it was expanded in 1989 to a capacity of approximately
4 million litres of alcohol, which doubled its production.
Allt-a-Bhainne appears to be one of the most efficient distilleries
in Scotland and it's been said a single person can run the
entire distillation process. Allt-a-Bhainne is not a traditional
distillery; the fresh spirit is transported by tanker trucks
to Keith where it is casked and stored. There has never been
an official bottling of Allt-a-Bhainne (meaning burn of milk),
however there have been several independent bottlings available.

Nose: Clean, fresh
and lively. Pretty estery: flowers, pears, dolly mixture.
All high-toned with some dried grass. Malty note with
water.
Palate: Soft, quite
sweet (sugared almond), light and fairly creamy spirit.
Finish: Short. Immature.
Comment: A well-made
light and clean dram.

Distillery

The water sources for Allt-a-Bhainn are the
Scurran & Rowantree Burns and the distillery produces
4,000,000 litres of pure alcohol per year. Allt-A-Bhainne
was acquired by Pernod Ricard in 2001 and one year later,
it was mothballed along with its sister distillery, Braeval.
In May of 2005, it was reopened and production resumed.
